genus casuarina
Though found in other parts of the world, the 56 species of Casuarinas are very Australian. They grow throughout Australia and vary in size from small bushes to tall trees 30m high. This dense, hard timber is used in fencing, housing, furniture and as fuel. It is excellent for wood turning. The timber ranges in colour from fawn through reddish brown to dark red and has spectacular darker flashes or medullary rays.
